…. on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception!

The sheer beauty of the Brigittine Divine Office (the Propers of which we are appending to the regular, 1962 Latin Divine Office) never fails to astound me again and again, but especially on Our Lady’s Feastdays. Plans to write more about are afoot, please pray that they materialise soon!  In the meantime, here is a sample, showing   the rich imagery of the Brigittine hymns.

From the Brigittine Breviary: The hymn on the Feasts of of the Blessed Virgin Mary for the Little Hours (ad Primam, ad Tertiam, ad Sextam, and ad Non

Ignis ardore triplicis

Mundi decor emarcuit

Eripit fons in medio

Terrae per quem refloruit

By the heat of a triple fire

The beauty of the world withered away

A fountain erupted in the middle of the land

By which the land flourished again.

O Virgo fons laetitiae

Tu corda nostra marcida

Irriga rore gratiae

Sint ut virtute florida

Oh, Virgin, fountain of joy

Soften our hearts

Irrigate them with the dew of grace

So that they would be flowery with virtue

Maria  Mater gratiae

Mater misericordiae

Tu nos ab hoste protege

Et hora mortis suscipe

Mary, Mother of grace

Mother of mercy

Protect us from  the enemy

And recieve us at the hour of our death.

Gloria tibi Domine

Qui natus es de Virgine

Cum Patre et Sancto Spritu

In  sempiterna saecula. Amen

Glory to Thee, O Lord

Who hast been born of the Virgin

With the Father and the Holy Ghost

Into the eternal ages. Amen.
